Besides chocolates, Belgium is also known worldwide for its delicious waffles. A waffle is a batter or dough-based cake cooked in a waffle iron. The “Belgian waffle” is a type of waffle, identified by its larger size, lighter batter and higher grid pattern.
 
There are a number of different types of waffles, including the Brussels waffle and the Liège waffle. These can be eaten natural or with powdered sugar. Depending on the region, they are eaten with different toppings.
 
The Liège waffle (from the city of Liège) is a richer waffle, denser in texture and sweeter. Invented by the chef of the prince-bishop of Liège in the 18th century as an adaptation of brioche bread dough, it features chunks of pearl sugar, which caramelize on the outside of the waffle when baked. It is the most common type of waffle available in Belgium and can be sold naturally, with vanilla or cinnamon by street vendors throughout the nation.
